Carranca 30cm - Brazilian Folklore Carved Wood Art - Wards Off Evil Spirits

Carranca is a sculpture with human or animal form, produced in wood and used at first in the prow of the boats that navigate by the river Sao Francisco. It was spread in Brazil as a form of folk art, being sold at fairs and craft shops. It is not known whether their origin is black or Amerindian, or whether they would be amulets or simply ornaments. The artisans who produce carrancas are called carranqueiros.
